NSK won the "2019 Japanese Society of Tribology Award" from the Japanese Society of Tribology
In recent years, in order to prevent global warming, it is necessary to further reduce the bearing torque. Although reducing the viscosity of the lubricant or reducing the filling amount of the lubricant is an effective method, it may cause various surface damages. Therefore, there must be a method that can accurately measure the thickness of the oil film inside the bearing.
This time, by improving the traditional electrical impedance method 2, NSK developed a method that can measure the film thickness of the EHD contact 3 area and simultaneously measure the rupture rate with the same accuracy as the general optical interferometry. The award-winning research focused on grease lubrication, which is widely used in rolling bearings, and clarified the mechanism of grease lubrication under low-speed conditions using the developed technology.
It is hoped that this technology can be used in the future to further clarify the lubrication mechanism of rolling bearings under various conditions, and help develop rolling bearings with low torque and long life.
2: Electrical impedance method: a method to test the gap between two relatively moving surfaces through the ratio of voltage to current (=impedance) in an AC circuit
3: EHD (Elasto Hydro Dynamic) contact: the contact state where the elastic deformation of the contact surface cannot be ignored
